Are we looking at the last number one songs forever? We will be out of time. Indeed, it was a fascinating decade of music. There so many new styles and trends. Music that was once underground with a niche audience went mainstream during this decade.

The major revisions created exciting chart moves and record breakers. The hit barometer churned out interesting results. All of which was based on real time information. However, there were always flaws to the chart.

The music industry were less interested in singles sales and more about the maximum profit from album sales. If you were to look at the airplay and sales components throughout the decade, the results were worlds apart.

Musically, brings back Pop music, particularly teen pop. Yes, Bubblegum Pop returned with a vengeance. The tween audience were a big market for the singles buying public. There was something for everyone. Even adults could find a care free poppy song to purchase or listen to.

This year those musical styles took a back seat on the chart. Pop Music ruled the year. Another musical trend that emerged in was Latin Pop. Latin Pop particularly here in the states is Pop music with Latin American or Spanish influences usually mixed with contemporary American Pop music and Dance music. While there were no 1 singles in this genre, Country music found more of a presence on the Hot chart this year.

Country made huge sales on the Billboard during the decade but the musical genre saw bigger growth on the Hot chart. The most interesting thing to witness was the new chart methodology in effect for the full year. The big change occurred on December 5, Billboard adjusted the chart tabulation to allow airplay tracks to enter the chart.

An airplay track is eligible to enter the Hot when it enters the top 75 in the Billboard Airplay Monitor a. Hot Airplay. The airplay tracks rise up the chart based on the strength of their airplay. Normal chart movement to the top came back on the Billboard Hot chart. There would have to be extraordinarily high sales for a debut in the top ten. Although, it was not uncommon for noticeable big jumps into the top ten when a song became commercially available as a single.

There were even big tumble downs the chart similar to the pre-SoundScan era. Record companies still maintained their tactic of releasing commercial singles when airplay was at its peak. Record distributors would ship enough singles to achieve Gold to Platinum sales for a limited time. The template for that formula was closely adapted to the Hot chart.

The net took us on a never ending ride along the information superhighway. The internet affected how we communicated with each other, how business was conducted and the endless amount of information found online. Music artists now displayed their websites on their albums and singles by The year induced a colossal fear spread around the world which was Y2K. The biggest fear centered around the panic that destructive missiles could be set off. A tremendous amount of endeavors began to remedy and prepare ourselves for this doomed breakdown.

So was seen as the last hurrah for society. Have you ever what Brandy? Have you ever so loved somebody so much. Have you ever needed something so much? It appears that Brandy is singing about somebody to love from a first person perspective.

She is in love and she is expressing her deepest feelings about that special someone. The song was written by well known songwriter, Diane Warren. The song peaked on the Billboard Hot Airplay Monitor at This was the week which allowed airplay tracks to enter the chart. So her chart run began in December and then Atlantic Records issued a commercial single for her song.

Oh man, you knew the world was coming to end when Britney Spears reached the top. Alright, Britney Spears comes from Kentwood, Louisiana. She got her start in local stage productions and talent shows including Star Search. Her big break came in appearing on The Mickey Mouse Club. The Mickey Mouse Club also featured other notable stars of this time period as well.

It was around when Britney secured a record deal and recorded her debut album. She also went on a shopping mall tour to promote herself, a move similar to 80s pop star, Tiffany. Baby One More Time. Her music video featured Britney as a schoolgirl singing and dancing about her feelings after a breakup. The video became iconic and brought on a new era of pop music to the mainstream. It was the highest debut for the week of November 21st, Soon after, Britney Spears debut single picked up its airplay and the sales went through the roof.

So Miss Britney Spears rose to the occasion. The single stayed two weeks at 1 and sold over 1 million copies. The success of her single propelled her album of the same name to multi-Platinum status. Britney was everywhere in with even more music videos and singles throughout the year.

There was also tons of Britney merchandise such as Britney dolls, posters, gel pens, lunch boxes, trading cards, jewelry, and everything else you could imagine for a pop princess. Uh-oh, Brandy and Monica are at it again. Are they still feuding over that boy?

Girls let it go, your records are selling in the millions. As for Monica, I think she found herself an angel and according to her, the angel is mine. The Eternal version of the song did not chart in America. Monica re-recorded the song for her album, The Boy Is Mine. At first, it was an airplay only song. Then the retail single release occurred in January. This caused her song to jump from 22 to 6. It was also her third consecutive Platinum single.

During most of the s, Cher fell out the limelight. Her albums did not fare very well and she made sporadic appearances in movies. Cher still remained popular with her adoring fans some of whom idolized her. There was something about this song that people just loved so much. If she had kept with that style, her song would have sounded dated. The biggest thing that stood out was the use of Auto-Tune voice distortion used throughout the song. It was a rather pioneering use of the technology at that time.

There were over 9 different remixes of the song. Then a setback occurred where her song fell down to The single went up only by its sales and fluctuated just below the top It goes to show you how much weight was put on airplay.

Pop radio stations jumped all over this. Soon after, Cher got into the top 10 awarding her the Greatest Gainer Airplay. It was no surprise, Believe hit 1 on March 13th, She also accomplished two record breaking accomplishments. Cher is the oldest female artist to achieve a 1 single at 52 years old.
